Three years ago I held you in my arms for the first time. I looked into your sweet face and felt the joy of being a grandfather. But there was a sadness in my heart when I thought about how the world might be when you grow up.
I first learned about global warming in the late 1980s. Around the same time that a three year old came dancing and singing into my life.
When I adopted your mom E.J. the future became personal. I wanted to make this world a better place for her and I got down to work.
When your aunt Aven was born ten years later, more and more people were talking about climate change. But our governments were not taking action. In fact, we were moving in the opposite direction. I knew I needed to work harder to change that.
When you were born it was clear that standing on the outside trying to create change was not working. It was time for me to step into the political arena.
I pray that your generation is important enough to inspire my generation to take action before it is too late. The steps we must take together to ensure a secure livable future may seem daunting and difficult, but they cannot compare to the struggle you will face if we fail you.
I don’t know what the future will bring Merina. I don’t know if science will prevail and cooperation will reign. All I can promise is that I will be here every step of the way, fighting for your future.
